Description
Muktinath Temple is Nepal's most sacred place at 3,710 meters within the beautiful Mustang region. The temple stands out where both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims worship and seek peace. Pilgrimage that brings us closer to our heritage and roots is a journey to Muktinath for us and our friends from Nepal. The temple is situated at the foot of Thorong La Pass, beneath white mountains and wasteland. It's known as the "Last Forbidden Kingdom" because it's like nothing else in Nepal. It's a desert and there are rocky hills, so it has this alien appearance, but it's highly revered by millions of others.
What Makes Muktinath Special?
The 108 Sacred Waterspouts
The most sought-after view of Muktinath Temple is its 108 bull-headed waterspouts. The waterspouts flow around the clock throughout the year, even in the coldest of winters. Hindu mythology says that a shower of water from these spouts cleanses one of his/her sins and provides moksha (freedom) to him/her. For Buddhists, 108 spouts represent purification from 108 corruptions of the mind.
The Eternal Flame
Right next to the mid temple is the Jwala Mai Temple, where a flame is always lit. The flame is being lit phenomenally in the way it is lit upon flowing water, which is hardly available in nature. The flame is being lit on natural ground-floor gas and is thus a pure wonder of nature and religion. Religious Harmony Muktinath is one of those sites where Hinduism and Buddhism sit side by side harmoniously. Lord Vishnu stays here, the pilgrims feel, and Buddhists feel that this is the sacred meditation place of Guru Rinpoche. This sacred life is because of our multicultural Nepali culture.

We arrange for your hassle-free stay, local guides well versed in the business, and necessary permits so that all you must worry about is your religious pursuit.
Start your spiritual pilgrimage early in the morning with a car journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara (approx. 6-7 hours). The route is through scenic hills, villages, and rice fields that showcase the Nepalese natural landscape. Stop at Malekhu for lunch and enjoy the renowned fish curry Malekhu is renowned for.
Along the route, you cross Mugling, Trishuli, and Marsyangdi confluence river and observe the topography change while driving from Kathmandu to Pokhara valley. The road itself is good with a Himalayan view on a clear day, with a view of Manaslu and the Annapurna range.
Reach Pokhara in the evening and stay overnight at the Lakeside hotel. Take a stroll along Phewa Lake on arrival and glimpse of mirror-like reflection of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) on still water. Early dinner at a local restaurant and a sound sleep for mountain driving the next day.
Early drive from Pokhara to Jomsom - 8-9 hours. One of the most scenic drives in Nepal, it meanders through the world's deepest gorge - the Kali Gandaki Valley. It meanders along the river Kali Gandaki, and one sees how the terrain changes from hills to dry, desert plains.
Break for breakfast and resupply at Beni, and start the mountain trek climb. During the trek, stop at Tatopani (hot springs), where travelers rest to enjoy natural hot water springs. Stop at Ghasa, Larjung, and Tukuche villages, each of which provides a good experience of mountain life.
The gradient increases as you ascend further, but the panorama of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks becomes more breathtaking. Observe how the dark forests gradually give way to the antsy desert landscape of Mustang. Arrive at Jomsom in the evening, unwind at your hill resort, and savor a hot Thakali dinner.
Visit Muktinath Temple (3-4 hrs trekking and 1.5 hrs jeep drive). The jeep drive goes through Ekle Bhatti and Khingar village with stunning views of Nilgiri Peak, Tilicho Peak, and Thorong La pass.
If done on foot, you'll be walking in the footsteps of the long-forgotten Tibet to Nepal trade route. This is a completely ancient route that has been walked for centuries and will take you back in time to relive the history of the great trading in the area. It's a moderately challenging walk, but one that is well worth it with nice mountain scenery en route.
Arrive at Muktinath (3,710 m) and rest at your guesthouse. Rest for a couple of hours and acclimatize. Lunch amidst the views of the surrounding hills. First visit to the sacred Muktinath Temple in the afternoon.
Step inside the temple complex and walk towards the primary shrine of Lord Vishnu. Temple buildings are pagoda-style and built in the conventional Newari manner, which looks majestic with snow-capped peaks forming the background. Bask in the atmosphere to acclimate to the serene surroundings and the religious environment of the sacred site.
The ideal time to pray and meditate is early morning when the location is less populated and the Himalayan views are seen. Watch the sunrise over the Himalayas in the early morning in the temple complex. Take part in the puja (prayer session) in the morning and enjoy the centuries-old rituals that are performed here.
Following breakfast, begin the holiest part of your journey - the sacred ritual bath underneath the 108 holy waterspouts. The ice-cold water from the bull-headed spouts is believed to wash away sin and provide moksha (liberation). Even though the water is extremely, extremely cold, millions of pilgrims have learned that this is spiritually cleansing and deeply emotional.
Visit the local temples of Jwala Mai, where there is a burning fire in the midst of flowing water. It is a miraculous, natural wonder which can only add to the sacredness of the site. Sit there in silence for some time and soak up the immense spirituality which can be felt here.
Afternoon excursion to the local ancient Buddhist monastery. The monastery had lovely Buddha statues and some very old texts on the Buddhist significance of Muktinath. Buddhism and Hinduism blend so well and show harmony in our Nepalese culture.
Begin your final day by going to Muktinath Temple again in the morning in gratitude to thank and pray for your destiny. Use this time to review everything you have learned and realized during your pilgrimage.
Breakfast and departure by jeep or walk to Jomsom, your choice - fresh morning sunshine brings fresh impressions of the same gorgeous land already explored, with more photography and last glimpses of holy ground.
Arrive at Jomsom, have lunch, and await your pick-up at Pokhara. This is also the period for buying some of Mustang's renowned apples, apple wine, or dry food items as presents for family and friends.
Travel the long distance to Pokhara (8-9 hours) late in the day. The journey back is the same stunning road, but the afternoon sun is enchanting, and the whole landscape glows with a golden light. Punt again at Tatopani if you wish to go to the hot springs before reaching Pokhara.
Reach Pokhara in the evening and stay overnight in a hotel. Farewell dinner at a lakeside restaurant on the final day of pilgrimage, reminiscing about the days and relishing the divine experience.
