Upper Mustang Tour

Description

Upper Mustang is one of Nepal's most mysterious and beautiful regions, located in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. It was a kingdom and had a king until 2008. It was cut off from the rest of the world until 1992, thus retaining its extremely different culture and tradition of Tibet in its original form.

Also referred to as "Last Forbidden Kingdom," Upper Mustang offers visitors a chance to step back in time. Monasteries of a century ago, cave complexes of centuries past, and mud-brick villages of a century ago are what you get to witness. The scenery is dreamlike with red rock cliffs, deep gorges, and seemingly endless blue skies.

The Lobas are the indigenous inhabitants of Upper Mustang and were able to preserve their Tibetan Buddhist way of life for over 1,000 years. They have their distinct language, retain traditional customs, and adopt a symbiotic way of living with the harsh mountain landscape. Their warm, welcoming attitude and hospitality ensure each tourist receives a hospitable welcome and VIP treatment.

This stunning region is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Tatopani's well-known hot springs, the enormous waterfalls, and ancient cave networks are only a few of the world-class natural wonders Upper Mustang boasts. Upper Mustang is so naturally blessed with landscapes that you will not be able to help but be amazed by them. It is perfect for nature lovers, photographers, adventure enthusiasts, and culture vultures.

History of Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang has a recorded history of over 1,000 years. It was an early part of the Tibetan Empire and later a separate kingdom, Lo. "Mustang" is a loan from the local Tibetan "Monthang," or "fertile plain."

The Lo kingdom was founded by Ame Pal in 1380, and he founded the capital city of Lo Manthang as a walled city. The kingdom was semi-autonomous even when Nepal was unified into a country for over 600 years. The Mustang kings governed their subjects based on customary Tibetan law and tradition.

Ever since the declaration of Nepal as a republic in 2008, the Kingdom of Lo has had its existence in limbo, but its royal heritage is very close and dear to the people's hearts. The current king, Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista, stays at Lo Manthang and is not afraid to spend any sum of money in maintaining his people's heritage and culture.

The isolation of the region kept the culture, language, and way of life of the region unique. Upper Mustang is now a living museum where you will witness how people used to live some hundred years back in the Himalayas.

About Upper Mustang Tour

This 5-day Upper Mustang trek is ideal for those who wish to trek into Nepal's most distant and ethnically diverse area. It is an excellent combination of adventure, culture, history, and nature in a stunning package.

You start in Kathmandu and set off on a jeep drive down some of Nepal's most breathtaking mountain roads. You travel through diverse scenery from fertile valleys to high plateaus. You see old monasteries, stop to smile hello at villagers, and catch glimpses of some of the prettiest Himalayan landscapes.

The tour is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, as it's mainly a road trip with some easy walking. You'll be staying in locally owned guesthouses and getting the best of Nepali and Tibetan hospitality. Since you'll be in a small group of 6-15 travelers, this is not a high-altitude but a high-quality adventure.

This tour is best for Buddhists, photographers, fans of Tibetan culture, and those who love adventure. It is also perfect for travelers who would like to visit a place that is different from the rest of the world.

Your tour begins early in the morning with a morning drive from your Kathmandu hotel. You drive west on the scenic Prithvi Highway, one of the world's most scenic drives. The highway runs through rice village and step cultivation hill, and through dramatic rivers. You notice villagers plowing the fields and kids playing in the village courtyard.

As you leave Kathmandu valley, there is a gradual transition to a rural landscape from the urban one. Naubise, Malekhu, and Kurintar towns are small and rural in character and were traversed along the way. The highway goes along the side of the Trishuli River, with great views of green ridges and distant mountains. Have lunch at one of the restaurants and consume Nepali food.

Beni is a town that constitutes the entry of the Mustang district. Spend a night there and set off early morning tomorrow towards the mountains. It is a town where two rivers converge and has a cool climate. Spend the evening at the local bazaar and socialize with your traveling crew.

This is the culmination of your trekking experience as you trek in the Upper Mustang restricted area. You will trek north to the deepest river gorge in the world, Kali Gandaki gorge, in the morning. It is even more beautiful going upwards with cliffs and huge gorges on either side.

Your initial major stopover is Tatopani, where you get a chance to relax in natural hot springs and see a landscape of mountains. "Tatopani" is Nepali for "hot water." Then you will continue to Jomsom, Nepal's windiest town. The landscape transforms from green valleys to a dry-like landscape with red and yellow cliffs.

After passing through Charang village with its ancient monastery and fortress, you'll finally reach Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo. This beautiful city has been inhabited by the royal family for over 600 years. You will be arriving at your guesthouse and late afternoon trekking along old trails and encountering villagers.

Start your day by going to Lo Manthang's renowned monasteries. Jampa Lhakhang is over 600 years old and possesses lovely paintings and Buddha statues. Thubchen Gompa is a very old monastery and has lovely paintings on the walls. You watch the Buddhist culture and experience the life of a monk, and pray in this isolated area.

See the King of Mustang Royal Palace, scripturally minimized and plain, where you can see glimpses of royal family members. The palace is constructed from wood, a historical Tibetan structure with magnificent architecture and objects that are centuries old. Breathe in the walled city's narrow alleys and gaze at the century old mud-brick traditional houses. See some of the individuals working on their traditional art and them on their small plots.

Afternoon excursion to the world-famous Jong Cave, a 5-story 1,200-year-old cave system at Chhoser Valley. The fascinating cave system was dug out of the face of the cliff and was a place to live in as well as a place of meditation for Buddhist monks. The view of the valley from the cave is stunning, overlooking the large Mustang valley. You would get to view the surrounding villages and meet Loba people who would welcome you and introduce you to their culture and way of life.

Leave Lo Manthang after breakfast and head south into the stunningly unfolding scenery of Mustang. You make your way downhill, the desert landscape gradually giving way to more verdant valleys, and you can see the changing landscape stretching out before you. Drive through old villages like Ghami and Samar, each unique in its nature and quaint traditional architecture.

Stop at Kagbeni, one of the most beautiful villages in the Mustang region and the traditional gateway to Upper Mustang. Two rivers meet in the old village, and also a very nice view of the hills all the way around. Cobble roads, old houses, and a more than 500-year-old monastery. Take pictures and walk around.

Travel to Marpha, Apple Valley, and old distilleries. The village is famous for growing Nepal's best apples and old apple brandy. The village is neat, having pristine stone roads and lovely traditional homes. You overnight here and dine on fresh fruits and local food. It is warmer and more family-oriented than Lo Manthang.

Start your last day with a visit to the village apple orchards and distillery to witness the apple brandy made traditionally. The village is set amidst picturesque mountain scenery, and there is peaceful, relaxed air here. You will also visit the local monastery and walk around the traditional streets for the final time before you start your journey home.

Drive to Pokhara, the adventure city and the second-largest metropolis in Nepal. Some of its offerings include Tal Barahi Temple on Phewa Lake, stunning Devi's Fall waterfall, and Bindabasini Temple. Pokhara is famous for its stunning lakes, mountain scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere. Lunch here and shopping, and lakeside relaxation are facultative. Return drive from Pokhara sightseeing to Kathmandu. One is driven through scenic Nepalese countryside and villages.

Return drive to Kathmandu in the evening, completing your great 5-day trek to Upper Mustang. The final drive gives some time to absorb all that has been seen and experienced, and all the great experiences and memories that you have gained on this trek in the Forbidden Kingdom.

Best Time to Visit Upper Mustang

Spring Season (March to May)

This is the best time to visit Upper Mustang. The weather is clear and dry, with warm days and cool nights. Mountain views are good, and road conditions are also okay. Spring flowers are in full bloom, so the landscape becomes more attractive.

Autumn Season (September to November)

Second-best time to visit, with fine weather and fine temperatures. The monsoon rains have passed through, so the air is clean and fresh, and the hill vistas are breathtaking. It's harvest time too, so farmers will be working in the fields.

Winter Season (December to February)

While it's cold, winter can be a good time to visit if you don't mind the low temperatures. It will be sunny days and off-season weather. High passes will be closed automatically because of snow.

 Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

This is not a good season to visit Upper Mustang due to possible blockade and cloudy weather. Nonetheless, Upper Mustang is comparatively less rainy than the rest of Nepal, and half traveling is still feasible.

Cultural Significance

Upper Mustang holds paramount importance in the preservation of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Upper Mustang monasteries house some of the oldest and most valuable Buddhist religious texts, images, and artifacts in the world. The majority of the cultural treasures were saved from extinction at times of turmoil in Tibetan history.

The Loba people have maintained their traditional way of life for over 1,000 years. They continue to live in polyandry (one woman and several men), traditionally grow barley and buckwheat, and even celebrate traditional festivals in the same manner for centuries.

The region is also important for Buddhist pilgrims, who visit the religious sites and monasteries. The monasteries and caves were reportedly blessed by the great Buddhist masters and are objects of greatest veneration.

The flat roofs and mud-brick houses of Upper Mustang are suited to severe mountain weather. These customs have been passed down through the centuries and are generations of acclimatization to survival in the high Himalayas.
